Subsea Gelled Pipeline Restart Theory

When waxy paraffinic crude oil cools below its pour point in deep subsea flowlines, wax crystals interlock to form a rigid structural gel possessing an inherent shear yield stress $\tau_y$.

1. Minimum Breakthrough Pressure (Bingham Plastic Yield)

Equating the axial pressure driving force to the shear resistance exerted by the gel plug along the inner pipe perimeter:

$$\Delta P_{\text{break}} \cdot \left(\frac{\pi D^2}{4}\right) = \tau_y \cdot (\pi D L) \implies \Delta P_{\text{break}} = \frac{4 \tau_y L}{D}$$

2. Compressible Fluid & Pipe Wall Elastic Packing

Because crude oil is compressible and steel pipes expand elastically under high internal pressure, the pressure wave does not move the far end of the gel immediately. The required volume of additional fluid pumped before the far end yields is:

$$\Delta V_{\text{pack}} = V_{\text{pipe}} \cdot \left( \beta_{\text{fluid}} + \frac{D}{t_w E} \right) \cdot \left(\frac{\Delta P_{\text{break}}}{2}\right)$$
