ASME B31.12 & Wobbe Index Blending Theory

The blending of hydrogen into high-pressure natural gas transmission pipelines is governed by ASME B31.12 (Hydrogen Piping and Pipelines) and international gas interchangeability standards such as ISO 13686 and EN 16726.

1. Wobbe Index & Combustion Interchangeability

The Wobbe Index ($WI$) dictates whether end-user appliances (industrial gas turbines, boilers, and domestic burners) can burn the blended gas without experiencing flashback, flame liftoff, or unacceptable $NO_x$ emissions:

$$WI = \frac{\text{GHV}}{\sqrt{G}} = \frac{\text{GHV}}{\sqrt{\text{MW}_{\text{mix}} / \text{MW}_{\text{air}}}}$$

Most international pipeline tariffs restrict Wobbe Index shifts to within $\pm 5\%$ of standard reference pipeline gas (typically $48.5\text{--}52.5\ \text{MJ/Sm}^3$). Beyond $15\text{--}20\%\ H_2$, burner orifices and fuel gas control valves require hardware retuning.

2. Hydraulic Pressure Drop Penalty (Weymouth Equation)

Because hydrogen has a lower energy density, moving the same amount of heating energy requires increasing volumetric gas velocity by $Q_{\text{blend}} = Q_{\text{base}} \cdot (\text{GHV}_{\text{base}} / \text{GHV}_{\text{blend}})$. Pipeline pressure drop is modeled via the Weymouth compressible flow formulation:

$$P_1^2 - P_2^2 = \frac{Q^2 \cdot G \cdot T \cdot L \cdot Z}{C \cdot D^{5.333}}$$

3. ASME B31.12 Hydrogen Embrittlement & Material Derating

When hydrogen partial pressure exceeds $2.0\ \text{MPa}$ ($20\ \text{bar}$), atomic hydrogen reduces steel fracture toughness ($K_{IH}$) and accelerates fatigue crack growth rates ($\text{d}a/\text{d}N$). Under ASME B31.12 Chapter IX (Option B), the design factor $F$ must be derated from $0.72$ down to $0.50$ for high-strength steels ($X70, X80$), while moderate strength steels ($X52, X65$) maintain higher tolerance ($F = 0.60\text{--}0.72$).
