Volumetric Flow Rate
What is Volumetric Flow Rate?
Volumetric flow rate measures the volume of fluid that passes through a given cross-sectional area per unit of time. It is a strictly hydrodynamic property, distinct from mass flow, as the volume of compressible fluids (like gases) will change depending on the operating pressure and temperature.
Process engineers convert volumetric flow units to evaluate:
- Line Sizing: Ensuring fluid velocities remain within erosional and acoustic limits.
- Pump Sizing: Specifying centrifugal pump capacities in US GPM or m³/hr.
- Residence Time: Calculating liquid holdup in two-phase and three-phase separators.
Standard unit conversions include cubic meters per hour (m³/hr), barrels per day (bbl/d) for oil and gas, and gallons per minute (US GPM).
