Velocity
What is Fluid Velocity?
Velocity is the rate of change of position of a fluid element. In piping engineering, managing fluid velocity is one of the most strictly governed design criteria, as it directly impacts pressure drop, pipe wear, and noise generation.
Velocity conversions are critical for evaluating:
- Erosional Limits: Ensuring gas velocities do not exceed API 14E limits, preventing pipeline erosion.
- Minimum Flow: Maintaining sufficient velocity to prevent solid settling or liquid dropout in multiphase lines.
- Vibration & Noise: Keeping gas velocities below sonic (Mach 1) thresholds in relief flare headers.
