Engineering Notes
What is Time in Process Design?
Time is the continuous progress of existence and acts as the foundational denominator in virtually all dynamic engineering rates (flow, heat transfer, kinetics). Accurate time scaling is required to transition from micro-level chemical reactions to macro-level plant production.
Engineers manage time conversions to evaluate:
- Residence Time: Sizing vessels to allow enough time for oil, water, and gas to physically separate.
- Batch Processing: Scheduling cycle times for pharmaceutical and specialty chemical reactors.
- Production Rates: Converting per-second simulation data into annual plant capacity forecasts.
Quickly convert mathematical inputs between seconds, minutes, hours, and operational days.
